Quito, March 12 (RHC)-- Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced this Tuesday a "strategic alliance" with Erik Prince, founder of the security company Blackwater, which distributes mercenaries worldwide. This time, allegedly to combat organized crime in Ecuador, which the president himself has failed to undermine.
In a message on social media, the Ecuadorian president asserted that the new relationship with mercenary Erik Prince seeks to improve the country's capabilities in the fight against narcoterrorism and the protection of its maritime resources. However, the lack of details creates uncertainty among the population, as these are hired killers linked to massacres in Middle Eastern countries or illegal incursions into Venezuela.
Noboa's announcement comes amid rising violence in Ecuador, which has left more than 1,700 dead so far this year. Although the president promised "international aid" to combat impunity for organized crime, his alliance with Prince demonstrates the distortion in his appeal for foreign support.
The accusations against the Ecuadorian president, an expression of his forging alliances with a figure associated with war crimes and ties to Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, raise strong criticism about the direction the country will take.
Furthermore, this international espionage figure and his employees had direct links in 2007, when, under the guise of Blackwater, they murdered Iraqi civilians in cold blood in Baghdad's Nishur Square during the Iraq War.
While Noboa advances this strategy, the country faces the harsh reality of insecurity that continues to plague its population, more than a year after beginning his term with promises of a prosperous and secure country.
Prince's image, embroiled in international scandals, could be a risky card just days before the elections, in which Noboa faces leftist candidate Luisa González, who promises a different, non-brutal approach to combating violence.
