Caracas, March 21 (RHC)-- The U.S. government has threatened to impose new sanctions, which it described as severe and progressive, on Venezuela if it does not accept new deportation flights for its nationals. This took place after the Venezuelan government condemned the transfer of more than 200 Venezuelans to El Salvador without prior judicial process.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that unless President Nicolás Maduro "accepts a steady stream of deportation flights without further excuse or delay, the United States will impose new, severe, and progressive sanctions, as President (Donald) Trump made clear in his proclamation."
Regarding the talks between the U.S. and Venezuelan governments regarding the sending of more than 200 Venezuelans to El Salvador, citing a 1798 law that invalidates the possibility of prior judicial review, she responded that "at this point, they have been told they have to do it."
The official stated that the agreement between the governments of Donald Trump and El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele includes the disbursement of six million dollars and the return of two leaders of the MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha) gang and 21 alleged gang members also deported on Saturday. It also includes a commitment to Congress to ratify assistance for El Salvador's prison system.
The Venezuelan government, for its part, denounced cases of "arbitrary detentions, deportations without cause, confiscation of property and documents, as well as discriminatory and humiliating treatment" by US authorities.
