Brasilia, March 28 (RHC)-- Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has urged nations impacted by the high tariff measures of his U.S. adversary, Donald Trump, to respond reciprocally.
According to the president, the principle of reciprocity should be implemented and similar actions should be established for U.S. products, he stated at a press conference at the conclusion of his official visit to Japan, where he met with the highest authorities of the Asian country's government.
"The U.S. president is not the world's sheriff; he is simply the president of the United States," Lula stated after expressing concern about the repercussions on free trade following the implementation, next week, of new tariff regulations issued by the US president.
At the same time, he criticized Trump's lack of foresight, stating that the 25 percent tariff increase on vehicles purchased from Japan, a nation with a robust automotive industry, will only cause higher prices for US consumers and increase inflation.
According to the Brazilian president, no repercussions of this imposition could be beneficial to the economy and, instead, threaten multilateralism.
If Brazil is affected by the new tariff measures, Lula expressed his willingness to implement reciprocity measures.
