Mexico City, November 14 (RHC-teleSUR) -- Residents of the State of Mexico, overwhelmed by recent wave of violence in their district, called for a day of action on Sunday, November 16th outside of Mexico City.

Several social organizations in Mexico called for a big march on Sunday against the lack of security in the town of Ecatepec in the State of Mexico.

They are expecting more than five thousand participants in the march from various social sectors, after the State of Mexico has experienced a wave of crime in the past few months, especially in Ecatepec.

The wave of violence has reached new heights in Ecatepec during past weeks, much of it involving vigilantism and anger at the perceived inaction of the local police. A few weeks ago, the town’s representative, Octavio Martinez commented on bodies found in the sewage canal in the area known as the devil’s zone.

Just last week, residents of the Jardines de Santa Clara neighborhood burned a police patrol car and threw rocks at two municipal police after the officers attempted to intervene when they tried to lynch a suspected gang member.

The escalating violence has permeated into the ranks of law enforcement itself. On October 15th, two Ecatepec public security officials were detained in the neighboring Nezahualcoyotl for allegedly kidnapping an individual and for stealing 20,000 pesos (approx. US$1600) from another individual.
