Montevideo, November 24 (teleSUR-RHC)-- Uruguayan President Jose Mujica has taken back a statement that Mexico is like a “failed state,” after Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “categorically rejected” his statement and summoned Uruguay's Ambassador in Mexico City.

Following the Mexican government’s reaction, Mujica expressed his support and confidence in the country’s “political parties” and “democratic institutions.”

In an interview with “Foreign Affairs Latinoamerica” Sunday, Mujica said Mexico resembled “a kind of failed state,” referring to the 43 Ayotzinapa students that have gone missing over two months ago, and the dozens of mass graves that have been found in their search.

The Uruguayan president had said that events like those in Ayotzinapa are due to the "mass corruption" in Mexico. "Seen from a distance I think corruption is established as a tacit social custom. Most likely corrupt people aren't frowned upon; on the contrary, they're seen like winners; like splendid people. If it's like that, we're screwed."
