Santiago de Chile, December 3 (teleSUR-RHC)-- Chile´s President says she will comply with her electoral promises, but critics say she is still evading social organizations' demand for deeper reforms.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet will review the required mechanisms to bring into being a new constitution for the South American country, said Government spokesman Alvaro Elizalde on Tuesday.

“Chile needs a new Constitution that complies with international standards, a true expression of democratic traditions of our country,” he said.

Chile’s current constitution was established in 1980 under the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. For a number of years, social movements have been calling for a constitutional assembly to start a more open process for the creation of a new Magna Carta.

So far, Bachelet's government has yet to take a decision to initiate the process, but Bachelet has only spoken occasionally about the possibility to reform the constitution by the congress.
