Washington, December 20 (RHC)-- The top U.S. general in charge of forces fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has said it will take a minimum of three years to reach a turning point against the group.

Speaking to reporters, Lt. Gen. James Terry refused to give a more specific timeline. He said that "significant progress" had been made in stopping the offensive of the Islamic State, but that it would take "a minimum of three years" to turn the corner.

This week, the Barack Obama administration approved orders for hundreds of U.S. troops to deploy to Iraq as part of a mission to train and advise Iraqi troops.
