Caracas, December 27 (RHC-teleSUR), -- As Venezuela is set to join the United Nations Security Council, President Nicolas Maduro has appointed his current foreign minister as the U.N. representative.

Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro announced Friday his foreign minister Rafael Ramirez will take on the position of Venezuela's representative at the United Nations.

“With the Bolivarian vision of (former president Hugo) Chavez, let's achieve our task of defending the right to peace and sovereignty of the peoples of the world,” Maduro tweeted.

Ramirez was appointed foreign minister in September, after playing a leading role in shaping Venezuelan oil policy for a decade.

As of January 1, current communications minister Delcy Rodríguez will take over heading the foreign ministry in Ramirez's place.

Ramirez will head to the U.N. the same day Venezuela takes on its position on the U.N. Security Council (UNSC).

Venezuela obtained the Latin American and Caribbean rotating UNSC seat in October, after running for the position unopposed.

Despite criticism from some in the U.S. Congress, Venezuela's bid for the seat received overwhelming support from almost all its neighbors in South America. Maduro stated his government will use the seat to promote “a multipolar world.”
