Brasilia, January 19 (RHC-teleSUR) -- The Brazilian government expressed outrage Saturday over the execution of a Brazilian national in Indonesia on charges of drug trafficking.

Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira, 53, is the first Brazilian to be executed aboard after being arrested in 2003. Cardoso was allegedly found with 13.4 kg of cocaine hidden in his baggage at Jakarta airport.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff recalled her ambassador in Jakarta for consultation.

"Relations between the two countries have been affected... The Brazilian ambassador to Jakarta has been recalled for consultation," Rousseff wrote on her twitter account.

The Brazilian President made a plea for clemency Friday, but it was rejected by her Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo, who said he understood Rousseff's concern but could not change the sentence.

Meanwhile, another Brazilian citizen, Rodrigo Muxfeldt Gularte, is also condemned to death in Indonesia for drug trafficking charges.

Widodo resumed executions in 2013 after an unofficial four-year moratorium in the country, saying that no mercy will be shown to drug traffickers.

Brazil and Indonesia established relations in 1953, and have maintained cooperation in many areas since, including agriculture and high-technology industry.

However, this is not the first spat between the countries. In 1975, Indonesia undertook a violent invasion of East Timor, a country with whom Brazil has a close relation since both are former Portuguese colonies and Portuguese-speaking countries.
