Mexico, May 14 ( teleSUR-RHC)-- Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office has been ordered to hand over a public report of the investigation into last September’s enforced disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students in Iguala, Guerrero, including the statements of 36 soldiers who were interviewed during the investigation, Mexican newspaper Reforma reported Wednesday.

The Attorney General Office’s claim that the investigation must be kept confidential on the grounds that it is a preliminary report and declared unacceptable by the the National Access to Information Institute (INAI), which demands a public report.

According to the Federal Institute for Access to Information and Data Protection commissioner Areli Cano, confidentiality for preliminary results does apply when the investigation reveals serios violations of human rights, as in the case of the Ayotzinapa report.

The group of international investigators of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights, which has reported several torture testimonies from detainees, corroborates INAI’s account of the severity of human rights abuses in the case of Ayotzinapa, Cano added.

The Attorney General’s Office has argued that the investigation did not reveal serious human rights abuses, but other crimes such as organized crime, drug-related crimes and kidnappings.

Some human rights defenders have commented that the emphasis on organized crime in the account of events points to an effort to downplay the role of the state in enforced disappearances.

INAI remains firm that it is clear “at first sight” that the Ayotzinapa investigation will reveal information about grave violations that must be delivered in a public report.

Meanwhile, Mexico’s special commission tasked with investigating the disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students may be eliminated on Thursday along with 18 other special commissions slated to close due to budget cuts.
