Buenos Aires, December 10 (teleSUR-RHC)-- After eight years in office and one day before incoming President Mauricio Macri was sworn-in on Thursday, Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez addressed a massive crowd on Wednesday night in Buenos Aires.

“I hope that Argentina can be freer than ever,” she said, in what was her last speech as president. “The natural place of an activist doesn’t have to be the government, but it does have to be with the people and for the people,” she added, referring to the importance of grassroots participation in a democratic country.

Hundreds of thousands of people turned out in the Plaza de Mayo, including activists from groups such as La Campora, Militant Peronism, the Martin Fierro current, the Evita movement, the Communist Party, Popular Radicalism, and many others.

“I hope those who come next (to power) can, in four years, stand up in front of a plaza like this and look people in the eyes,” Fernandez said.

And Cristina Fernandez concluded: “Dear friends, every single one of you has a leader inside you, and when you feel that those who you trusted and voted for have betrayed you, take up your flags and know that you are the leader of your destiny and creator of your life.”
