Ramallah, January 5 (RHC)-- Israeli forces have wounded a Palestinian whom they accused of carrying out a stabbing attack in northern Jerusalem. The attacker reportedly tried to stab police officers but failed and then attempted to flee. Police shot him in the legs and arrested him, Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a statement on Monday.
An Israeli teenage girl was also apparently injured by bullet fragments from shots fired in the ensuing melee, added Samri.
Israel's imposition in August of restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the holy al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem, the third holiest site in Islam, has triggered a wave of tensions in West Bank and Gaza.
The restrictions on worshipers, along with increasing frequency of attacks by Israeli settlers backed by police, storming al-Aqsa Mosque, is a cause of frustration of Palestinians. The Palestinians believe Tel Aviv seeks to alter the status quo of the sanctuary.
