Rome, May 12 (RHC)-- Italy’s highest appeals court has ruled stealing small amounts of food if you’re hungry is not a crime.  The case concerned a homeless man who was convicted of theft and sentenced to six months in jail for stealing $4.50 worth of cheese and meat.

The court overturned his conviction, saying he had taken the food "in the face of the immediate and essential need for nourishment."
