Havana, July 29 (RHC), -- A Cuban court has imposed severe jail sentences on members of a criminal gang, who plotted to introduce illicit drugs into the country from Jamaica.

Granma newspaper reports that the criminal gang was successfully dismantled in 2015 thanks to public support for coordinated actions carried out by Cuba's Border Guard, the Interior Ministry and the National Attorney's Office in the provinces of Havana and Granma.

As a result, Cuban authorities seized 295 kg of marijuana and 31 000 dollars that were destined to finance further illegal drug shipments.

Cuban authorities also thanked Jamaican authorities for their cooperation, particularly in facilitating that the mastermind of the whole operation be brought to face trial here in Cuba.

All 11 offenders were condemned on charges of drug trafficking and sentenced to jail terms raging from 15 to 30 years.
