Havana, January 13 (RHC)-- Havana will host the 2nd International Symposium on Gender Violence, Prostitution, Sex Tourism and Trafficking in Persons “Berta Cáceres in Memoriam,” from June 23rd through the 25th.
Sponsored by National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX), the event aims to promote scientific debate and facilitate alliances between national and global institutions on the issue. Academics, researchers and social activists from Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Germany, Canada and South Africa have already confirmed their attendance.
In statements to the press in Havana, CENESEX Director Mariela Castro Espín noted that the event will be held at the La Pradera International Health Center, and will allow for the exchange of good practices and encourage the creation of inclusive public policies.
Topics for discussion will include gaps in gender equality, mechanisms of control, domination and prostitution, a social phenomenon commonly referred to as “the sex market”, that makes human beings subject to the law of supply and demand, and the protection of victims.
The Havana event will be dedicated to Honduran indigenous leader, the late Berta Cáceres, who was assassinated in March 2016. In dedicating the event to Cáceres, the organizing committee recognizes her active work in defense of indigenous peoples and environmental protection.
