New York, June 29 (RHC)-- Cuba urged at United Nations for increased cooperation among members states to overcome threats posed by weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons.

Addressing an open debate of the UN Security Council on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, Cuban permanent representative Ana Silvia Rodríguez, made it clear that Cuba does not possess and has no intention of possessing weapons of mass destruction and has taken steps to ensure the strict implementation of its commitments and obligations as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, a State Party to the UN conventions on chemical and biological weapons, and to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Treaty of Tlatelolco.

The Cuban diplomat referred also to Cuba’s active participation in the ongoing negotiations at the UN General Assembly on the text of a proposed document to prohibit nuclear weapons with a view to their total elimination. 

She asserted that Cuba will continue to advocate the adoption, as soon as possible, of a comprehensive document stipulating the elimination of nuclear weapons within a specified period of time, under strict international verification, as well as the need to resume, without further delay, the negotiation of a legally binding Protocol to strengthen the Biological Weapons Convention in an effective, comprehensive and balanced manner.
