New York, September 19 (RHC) — Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez rejected in strong terms Tuesday the speech given at the UN headquarters by US President Donald Trump, describing it as unnecessarily aggressive and brazenly imperialistic.

“I was surprised by the manipulation he makes of the issue of sovereignty, by which he means sovereignty for the United States and enslavement for all others,” Rodriguez told reporters covering the high-level debate at the General Assembly. He said the speech “totally ignores the concept of sovereign equality inspiring the United Nations.”

Trump spoke on the opening day Tuesday of the UN General Assembly's debate at its 72nd session, where he threatened several countries, including Cuba, Venezuela, Iran and the People's Republic of Korea.

The Cuban foreign minister said the head of the White House lacked moral authority to criticize Cuba, a small and supportive country exhibiting a well-known record of international cooperation.

The government in Cuba is one of recognized cleanliness and transparency, said Minister Rodriguez, who noted that Havana had hosted the Colombian peace talks and was known to be a factor for stability in the region. In his speech, Trump had called the Cuban government corrupt and destabilizing.

The Cuban foreign minister said that the current US administration is headed by a president who lost the popular vote and has a low popularity rate among US taxpayers. Here’s Cuba, he said, criticized by “the head of an empire responsible for most of the wars going on in the planet and which is a factor of profound global instability and very serious threats to international peace and security.”
