Havana, January 17 (RHC)--Cuban baseball fans will be watching closely the last match between Havana´s Industriales team and the Leñadores from Las Tunas slated for this evening at the Julio Antonio Mella Stadium. The game will decide the last contender to the finals of the current baseball post season on the island.
The incumbet champ, Granma, has remained idle over the last few days after beating the Cocodrilos from Matanzas, and is waiting for Wednesday results to see who will play them at the finals.
On Tuesday evening, thousands of fans at Mella Stadium witnessed an electrifying game. Industriales came to Las Tunas Headquarters in Eastern Cuba with a 3 to 2 lead, with one win away from becoming the second finalist.
Las Tunas players Rafael Viñales and Yordanis Alarcon, who had remained dormant during the previous games against Industriales, became the heroes of the night. With a single to the right field at the bottom of the eighth inning Viñales propelled the run that gave his team the lead and a rally of 4 runs. The final score was 6 to 3.
With the series tied with 3 wins for each side, if weather permits, the game on Wednesday evening is expected to be a nail biter.
The games of the finals between Granma and the winner of this game are expected to take place before the 29 of January, and the winning team of the island’s baseball championship will represent Cuba at the Caribbean Series that will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico from February 2 through 8.
