Havana, May 7 (RHC)-- The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, begins an official visit to Cuba on Monday.
During his stay, the distinguished guest will hold official talks with the President of Cuba’s Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and participate in the inauguration ceremony for the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean’s 37th period of sessions, and the commemoration of the UN organization’s 70th anniversary.
António Guterres is the United Nations ninth secretary general and assumed the position January 1, 2017. Previously, Guterres served as UN High Commissioner for Refugees, from June of 2005 through 2015.
Before taking on this responsibility, he worked for more than 20 years in public administration, serving as Portugal’s Prime Minister 1995-2002, and participating actively in international initiatives to resolve the crisis in Timor-Leste.
