Havana, April 17 (RHC) -- Workers and executives of Radio Havana Cuba commemorated on Wednesday the announcement by Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro of the creation of this shortwave radio station on April 16, 1961.
In a ceremony broadcast live from Radio Havana Cuba, participants listened to Fidel Castro's historic words, when he revealed that Cuba had a radio transmitter broadcasting the island's reality to Latin America and the world.
Pedro Martinez Pires, deputy director of RHC, recalled that momentuous April 16, 1961, when Fidel Castro proclaimed the socialist character of the Cuban Revolution, during a funeral service for the victims of the bombings of several airports across the island, a prelude to the U.S.-backed Bay of Pigs invasion.
As part of the ceremony, a canvas print of an image of Latin American hero, Simon Bolivar, was presented to the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, on behalf of the workers of the international radio station. The painting was received on behalf of the Cuban leader by photographer Alex Castro, who expressed his appreciation.
