Havana, December 16 (RHC)—Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez says the failure of the COP25 Climate Summit which wound up in Madrid on Sunday is a result of the lack of compliance by industrialized countries with their commitments and lack of political will.
Rodriguez tweeted on Monday that those countries “try to shift the burden to developing countries. And that capitalism is unsustainable.”
The meeting overran to become the longest climate summit yet as delegates from nearly 200 countries struggled to reach agreement on key issues on the framework underpinning the Paris climate deal. Drawing up rules on a carbon market between countries has been deferred until next year, when the UK hosts the next climate summit in Glasgow.
The Cuban foreign minister reiterated that the human species in danger of extinction, and argued the goal of maintaining a global average temperature increase well below 2°C and continuing efforts to achieve 1.5°C is misleading.
Rodriguez said that Cuba supports Greta Thunberg's demands and those of Ugandan girl Hilda Nakabuye.
Meanwhile, António Guterres, the UN secretary general, said he was disappointed with the outcome, and that leaders had missed an opportunity to be more ambitious on climate change mitigation, adaptation and finance for poorer countries. “But we must not give up, and I will not give up hope,” he tweeted.
