Washington, April 28 (RHC)-- Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who is now the almost certain Democratic candidate for the November presidential elections, has expressed his support for resuming the rapprochement with Cuba initiated by the Barack Obama administration.

In statements to a CBS television station in Miami, the White House hopeful stated that he would return to the policies adopted during the Democratic administration of Obama, from 2009-2017, and that he would reverse the restrictions imposed by Republican Donald Trump.

During the Barack Obama administration, in which Biden was vice president, the United States and Cuba began a process of normalization of relations that led to the restoration of diplomatic ties, the reopening of their respective embassies and the signing of 22 memoranda of understanding in different areas of common interest.

Likewise, direct regular flights were re-established and restrictions on travel by Americans to Cuba were relaxed, which led to a large increase in the number of Americans visiting the Caribbean country.

In March 2016, Obama became the first sitting-U.S. president to visit the Caribbean nation since 1928, and the wife of the former president, Jill Biden, stayed on the island in October of that year.
