United Nations, July 18 (RHC)-- Cuba's alternate permanent representative to the UN, Ana Silvia Rodriguez, called for working together to build the world of peace, freedom, equality and justice, saying that was Nelson Mandela's dream.

"Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Madiba, who fought for a better world," the ambassador wrote on her official Twitter account.

She also recalled the words of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, about Mandela when he said: "He was a man of integrity, a profound revolutionary and a radical socialist, who with great stoicism endured 27 years of solitary confinement."

Fidel admired the honesty, modesty and enormous merit of the South African leader, recalled the diplomat and shared images of both leaders together.

Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) dedicated a good part of his life to fighting discrimination, racism and inequality.  At 72, and after 27 years in prison for his anti-apartheid actions, he was elected President of South Africa and continued to promote a culture of peace, tolerance and freedom internationally.

In November 2009, the UN General Assembly proclaimed July 18, his birthday, as Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of his contributions.

The resolution highlights his values and dedication to the service of humanity through work in the areas of conflict resolution, reconciliation, promotion and protection of human rights, gender equality, the rights of children and other vulnerable groups.

He was also very active in the fight against poverty, inequalities and the promotion of social justice.
