Havana, August 17 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has ratified the importance of unity for the peoples of the Caribbean, evoking the thoughts of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.

The president referred on Twitter to the speech made by Fidel at the Summit of the Heads of Government of the Member States of the Association of Caribbean States on Trade, Tourism and Transport, held in Trinidad and Tobago on August 17, 1995.

At that time, Fidel said: "We have a great challenge ahead of us.  It is to forge a common destiny for nations that are remarkably disparate in size, population and development.  The region understands, at last, that in unity lies the future path of our peoples."

Fidel Castro also stated that Cuba believes in the idea of a united Caribbean and reiterated the certainty that together it is possible to overcome all difficulties.

Diaz-Canel, for his part, also maintained that "solidarity must be a fundamental principle for the members of the Association of Caribbean States."

The Cuban head of state, while addressing the participants of the 8th Meeting of the Association of Caribbean States, in Managua, Nicaragua, in March 2019, also reaffirmed the invariable support of the Caribbean nation to the countries of the area.

"The Association of Caribbean States must continue to be a pillar in the unity of the Greater Caribbean, which is the only alternative in the face of the enormous challenges we face," Díaz-Canel said at the meeting.
