Washington, October 15 (RHC)-- Democratic Representative James McGovern denounced Thursday the aggressive policy of the Donald Trump administration against Cuba and said that the Republican leader does not care about the people of the island, but only about getting re-elected.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, during a web conference co-sponsored by the National Council of Churches of Christ in the United States and the Council of Churches of Cuba, among other organizations, the legislator from Massachusetts accused the current U.S. government of maintaining a deliberately cruel policy against the Caribbean country.

"For the Trump administration, it has never been about the Cuban people.  This president does not care about the people, he does everything in the belief that somehow he will overthrow the government of the island with those punishments, and to try to get enough votes in Florida to be re-elected to the White House," the congressional representative said.

According to McGovern, by implementing actions such as slashing consular services, limiting travel and remittances, suspending cruise ships and banning hotel stays in Cuba, the president is seeking to please hardliners in the southern state, and showing little or no understanding of the realities of the island.

The U.S. lawmaker also condemned that the White House demonizes the Cuban program of sending doctors, nurses and medical assistance abroad, even during the current COVID-19 pandemic, and criticized that in this context there are restrictions for sending humanitarian aid to Cuba.

McGovern added that the U.S. government can say that it did not limit food and medicine, but in practice it hinders the ships and planes in which they are transported, and it also blocked the shipment of medical supplies such as ventilators and laboratory equipment.

The legislator admitted that no one knows what will happen in the elections next November 3rd, when Trump will seek re-election against Democrat Joe Biden.

Despite the current adverse outlook, the congressman spoke in favor of ending the blockade imposed by Washington on the island 60 years ago, and also called for lifting travel restrictions, as well as normalizing economic and diplomatic relations.
