The island's Finlay Institute of Vaccines released this information in a message on its official Twitter account.

It highlighted that the two Cuban drugs against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the pathogen that causes Covid-19 (Soberana 01 and Soberana 02), are part of the group of 47 drugs registered all over the world to fight the pandemic.

Soberana02 is already in the WHO Draft. This site is a reference for official information about the #VacunasVsCOVID19 that are in clinical trials. Currently, there are 47 registered candidates worldwide, two of them are Cuban', the tweet says.

Phase I of Soberana 02's clinical trials started this Monday, after its approval by the Center for State Control of Drugs, Equipment and Medical Devices.

This is an unprecedented, innovative drug among all those developed to face Covid-19, the director of the Finlay Institute of Vaccines, Vicente Vérez, recently explained.

The new candidate's novelty consists of being a conjugated vaccine. The virus's antigen, the receptor-binding domain (RBD), is chemically linked to the tetanus toxoid.

With Soberana 02, it is expected that the immunity reaches the respiratory tract's mucosa to avoid the entry of the virus. The vaccine candidate will be proposed to be applied in the pediatric population; the specialist pointed out.

Cuba is currently working on four projects against the Covid-19 pandemic.

In this regard, the President of the Cuban business group BioCubaFarma, Eduardo Martinez, recently highlighted that the strategy designed to have the islands own vaccines against Covid-19 "is going well" and before the end of 2020, there will be four candidates in clinical trials.

In 2021 our population will be immunized against this virus. Cubans can trust their scientists committed to the country,' the expert stated.
