Havana, July 15 (RHC)—Cuba announced the death of 67 people due to COVID-19  on Wednesday, an event associated with the lethality of the Delta variant of the virus circulating on the island.  The islands labs processed 45 721 for PCRs and antigen tests and detected  6 479 new infections.

In his daily televised briefing, the National Director of Epidemiology, Dr. Francisco Duran, said there were 41 559 active patients hospitalized.

Cuba now accumulates 263 086 positive cases diagnosed and  1726 fatalities associated with the disease.

Almost all provinces had significant increases in cases. Matanzas had 2159, Ciego de Avila 729, Havana 655, and Santiago de Cuba 467.

Meanwhile, the health intervention with the Cuban vaccine candidates Soberana02 and Abdala continues full steam ahead. As of July 13, 1 968 715 were fully immunized, and 7 767 601 doses were administered.

Doctor Duran recalled that being fully vaccinated decreases the disease's impact but does not fully deter the contraction of it, hence the importance of keeping social distancing, mask-wearing, and other measures.
