Havana, Aug 2 (RHC)-- President Miguel Díaz-Canel celebrated the performance of Cuban athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on a day when the island won its first gold medals.

How great you are Mijaín! Four Olympic gold medals for your homeland. Not a single point has been scored on you in Tokyo 2020! How much courage, how much bravery, what great respect and admiration we feel for you! Cuba admires and embraces you,! the President wrote on Twitter.

Lopez registered in Tokyo the historic milestone of winning four gold medals in the Olympic Games, never before achieved by an athlete in this specialty.

Minutes before, the head of state highlighted the feat accomplished by Luis Alberto Orta. He brought the first gold medal for his country in this discipline against all odds.

What a dawn you have given us, Luis Alberto Orta! After an impeccable competition, you have brought us the first gold medal in Tokyo 2020, fought from start to finish. Thank you for the joy. Cuba, like you, is unstoppable', wrote the head of state.

Díaz-Canel also congratulated long jump athletes Juan Miguel Echevarría and Maykel Massó for the silver and bronze medals won the day before despite both being injured during the competition.

Also noteworthy was the Olympic subtitle achieved this competition day by London 2012 gold medalist Leuris Pupo, in 25-meter rapid fire.

Happy Monday, Cuba! We enter the week with the same momentum as our athletes in Tokyo 2020. We continue to build together the country we want,' the President stressed on that social media platform.
