New York, October 7 (RHC)-- The Cuban government reiterated Wednesday its support for nuclear disarmament efforts promoted by the United Nations, while countries like the United States and its allies continue to expand their arsenals of these weapons.
Speaking at the First Committee of the General Assembly, the Permanent Representative of the Caribbean Island to the UN, Pedro Luis Pedroso, reiterated that the total elimination of these devices must continue to be a priority in the field of disarmament.
In this regard, he advocated the universalization of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. He said that Cuba will continue to support respect for international law and the United Nations Charter and adherence to multilateralism in disarmament negotiations.
Regrettably, the Cuban ambassador said, the aggressive nuclear doctrines and the modernization and expansion of the arsenals of the United States and its allies persist, 76 years after the criminal bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
My country also rejects selective, biased, and politically motivated approaches in implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention and the creation of mechanisms and procedures outside its scope; he told the plenary.
The Cuban diplomat advocated the adoption, as soon as possible, of a Protocol banning autonomous lethal weapons and called for the establishment of regulations for the use of devices with a certain autonomy, in particular military attack drones.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the United Nations Program of Action to Prevent, Combat, and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects.
