Havana, January 8 (RHC)-- Island authorities continued urging the population to act with discipline, responsibility, and total adherence to the established protocols, essential elements to prevent the health system from collapsing and putting the lives of citizens at risk.

The behavior of the coronavirus in the last few days has had truly remarkable increases.

During the first week of 2022, a steady increase in the number of confirmed cases was observed daily. On January 1 and 2, infected persons did not exceed 500 cases per day.

On Wednesday, January 5, the number of confirmed cases almost doubled to 967, and by Thursday, the island had already exceeded 1000 positive cases, a figure that had not been reached since October 24.

By Thursday, Cuba was already reporting 1946 new positive cases of covid-19, and 5,218 people remained hospitalized.

The provinces reporting the highest number of cases were Matanzas, Camagüey and Pinar del Río.

The Minister of Public Health informed that the number of confirmed cases per day should continue to increase rapidly, as has happened in the rest of the world with the circulation of the new Omicron variant.
