Havana, Jan 25 (RHC)-- Our vaccines have made it possible for Cuba to assume the onslaught of the pandemic in a very particular and positive way. However, the most potent weapon is still a responsibility, and this emerged Tuesday in a day of reflections on the fight against COVID-19.

This Tuesday, from the Palace of the Revolution, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez affirmed that the scenario would be very unfavorable, with chilling figures of lives lost, if the vaccines were made with talent and own efforts had not been achieved.

During the meeting, Dr. Guadalupe Guzmán Tirado, head of the Research, Diagnosis and Reference Center of the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) was pleased to report on the neutralizing antibody titers in sera of those vaccinated with a complete vaccination schedule and with a booster against the Omicron variant.

During the meeting, Doctor of Science Raul Guinovart Diaz, dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Havana, said that there is a trend of rapid growth in the number of recovered cases, which already exceed the number of active cases. Such behavior, said the professor, forces the number of active cases to decrease.

"We are passing the middle of the COVID-19 wave," the mathematician said. And he sounded a warning about how the graphs indicate that the numbers of fatalities are trending upward, thereby underscoring the need to be prepared to continue protecting vulnerable people.

In this regard, President Díaz-Canel stressed the importance of prioritizing the issue of the vulnerable; and to put special emphasis on primary health care, "to see well in each place who are the most vulnerable, how we attend them, how we advise them to protect themselves because in recent days we have seen a slight increase in critical and serious cases, we must see the protocols we are using, that everything that was foreseen here is maintained."
