Havana, July 16 (RHC) – Cuba is one of the few countries that continues working to guarantee health and education as rights, said Doctor Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), on Monday in Havana.

Chan, who is on a working visit to the island along with Doctor Carissa F. Etienne, director of the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), made this statement during a tour of the capital’s Center for National Coordination of Clinical Trials (Cencec).

The two officials verified there the development of the SUMA technology and the 33 kits to diagnose 19 diseases, among them colon, prostate and cervix cancers.

At Havana’s Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, and in the presence of Roberto Morales, member of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party and Minister of Health, and José Luis Di Fabio, representative to the island of the WHO/PAHO, they were given details about the BioCubaFarma Business Group, which has 38 enterprises and 78 factories with production centers throughout the country.

Chan expressed her interest in the inter-sectorial approach of public health in Cuba, which includes health promotion, prevention and education, unlike other nations, where such objectives are difficult to achieve.

"We passionately wish all people on the planet have access to quality medical services, like in Cuba", underlined Chan, who highlighted the way in which non-transmissible chronic diseases are treated, with prevention being the cornerstone.
