Caibarien, Jun 16 (RHC)-- The FAO-WFP sponsored project ProAct, being implemented in Caibarien, in central Cuba,  is yielding good results.

That’s according to participants in a workshop that is conducting on-site verification of the actions undertaken in the municipality of Caibarien, in the province of Villa Clara.

The program was designed to strengthen community resilience and strengthening local food systems.

According to those involved in the project’s implementation, one of the greatest merits of ProAct was establishing a direct link between farmers and teaching entities of preschool and primary education, which contributed to the supply of fresh vegetables for consumption by the children population.

They also highlighted the delivery of irrigation systems and solar panels to farmers, as well as the work carried out with food buyers from school institutions so that minors are privileged by adequate nutrition.

Participants at the workshop discussed the impact of the initiative in the creation of jobs for women in these localities. They also spoke about training activities for teaching staff regarding the importance of a balanced diet, and regarding the strengthening of productive capacities.

New equipment was also provided to municipal meteorological stations as part of the project, allowing for the supply of hazard, vulnerability and risk studies to the associated farms in the selected municipalities.
