Havana, Nov 29 (RHC) Representatives of Cuba and the World Free Zones Organization highlighted the benefits of the Mariel Special Development Zone (ZED) to attract foreign and national investment.

Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz reported on Twitter that he exchanged in Havana with Mohammed Al Zarooni, president of that organization, about the area's role in boosting the Caribbean country's economy.

"It is time to redesign the economy for the new scenarios, to this end, free trade zones or special economic zones are essential," Marrero Cruz said during a meeting Monday at the Palace of the Revolution.

According to a note from the Presidency, Al Zarooni highlighted the functioning of the ZED Mariel and how the Cuban government supports that project.

The president of the World Free Zones Organization praised the operations carried out there, especially from companies dedicated to pharmaceutical, biotechnological, and food products.

He referred to the increase in the number of companies involved in this type of projects, which are generally based on knowledge management, such as financial, banking and e-commerce operations.

Also present at the encounter were Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz, Cuban Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment; Ana Teresa Igarza Martínez, Director General of the ZEDM Office; and Samir Hamrouni, Director General of the World Free Trade Zones Organization.

The meeting highlighted the consolidation of the nine years old Cuban enclave, as an attractive place for foreign and domestic investment, the Presidency said in its press release. (Source: ACN)
