Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said that building a strong housing fund that can withstand the onslaught of cyclones is a priority for the country today.

Havana, December 24 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said that building a strong housing fund that can withstand the onslaught of cyclones is a priority for the country today.

At a meeting of the National Innovation Council (CNI), held the day before, with housing as a central theme, the president recalled that during the recent passage of Hurricane Ian through the west of the island, of the more than 100,000 houses damaged, a good part were the so-called temporary facilities.

We cannot continue living under the dilemma that every time a hurricane comes, thousands of houses are lost and then we have to rebuild them, he said.

At the meeting, several specialists made suggestions to the government, among them the relevance of rescuing the role of the State in housing management, which, they said, does not mean financing, but managing for all equally.

They also pointed out the need for the large-scale practical introduction of solutions such as the use of LC2 or LC3 cement, formulated by Cuban researchers, which significantly reduces fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

They affirmed that there are scientific results in the field of construction materials in the country, some of them partially introduced and others that have not been put into practice.

They also reaffirmed the importance of municipal governments as suitable managers of the housing process, and the construction of sustainable, friendly and humane cities, "that achieve a rational operation and an efficient and participative management".

The National Innovation Council, created in 2021, is a consultative body of the Cuban State with the central function of assisting the President of the Republic and making recommendations to promote creation in the country.

It is a platform for discussion and exchange of ideas and perspectives among specialists from the production and services sector, universities, science, technology and innovation entities, as well as the Cuban government.
