Lisbon, September 5 (RHC) -- Rene Gonzalez, one of the five Cubans who served a long prison sentence in the United States for fighting terrorism, arrived in Portugal Thursday to attend the Festival of the Communist daily Avante, and hold meetings with parliamentary friendship groups, regional authorities, and social and solidarity organizations.

Rene was arrested in the United States on September 12, 1998 along with Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, and Gerardo Hernandez, for alerting Cuba of violent attacks being planned and executed from U.S. territory by terrorist groups.

The Cuban Five, as they are internationally known, were subjected to a biased trial in Miami, full of irregularities, and finally condemned to long and unjustified sentences.

Rene and Fernando are back in Cuba after completing their sentences, but the other three companions remain imprisoned despite the intense international campaign to achieve their immediate and unconditional release.

The case of the Cuban Five will be present at the Avante Festival, running from September 5th to the 7th, where an activity will be held to demand the immediate release of the three who are still imprisoned in the United States.
