Cuba advocates education in China as a strategic sector for sustainable development

Havana, July 31 (RHC) The rector of the University of Havana, Miriam Nicado García, advocated in Beijing today for the institutionalization of education as a strategic sector for the socioeconomic progress of countries.

In her speech at the World Forum of University Presidents, the academic assured that governments have a leading role in this regard through the implementation of public policies that favor local development.

Nicado recalled that since the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, the Cuban government was aware of the link between economic and social development and scientific policy. She also recalled the creation of the Ministry of Higher Education in 1976 and later of the Innovation Council, a State body.

As part of her agenda in the Chinese capital, the rector spoke with Zhou Zuoyu, vice president of the Beijing Pedagogical University, an institution of higher education in the humanities and social sciences with a high development in scientific and technological innovation.

In addition, she signed an agreement between the University of Havana and the University of Communications of China to promote cooperation on issues ranging from the exchange of students and teachers, to participation in mutually beneficial research projects.

The Forum is a large-scale international academic conference held by China's higher education circles in recent years with the aim of building a platform for exchange and dialogue for the presidents of the world's top universities. (Source: PL)
