Sao Paulo, September 9 (RHC) -— Brazilian liberation theologian, Frei Betto, was bestowed on Monday with Cuba’s Solidarity Order in acknowledgement of his defense of the fair causes of the peoples.
The distinction, which is granted by the Cuban Council of State, was bestowed upon the Dominican friar during a ceremony at the Cuban consulate in Sao Paulo.
Cuban ambassador to Brazil, Marielena Ruiz Capote stressed the work of Frei Betto over the years and the relations of friendship between him and Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro, as well as his effective activism for the cause of the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters who were imprisoned in the United States in 1998.
Frei Betto for his part thanked the gesture of the Cuban government and people and he said that the island has given him its support, for which he was moved and grateful.
The ceremony was attended by Cuban diplomats, Brazilian writers and friars and local residents.
