Havana September 17 (RHC) -- More than half of the hydraulic units that provide water for human consumption in Cuba are in an unfavorable state, Cuba's National Institute of Water Resources said.
Even though the country registered greater volumes of rainwater in August than in July, authorities have called for water saving measures. The national rainfall average in August was 143.9 millimeters, which represents the 89 percent of the historical monthly average, according to this morning's edition of Granma newspaper.
However, the western part of the island in the area where it has rained less in 2014, reports just 74 percent of the usual average. Meanwhile, in the east, there was an increase in average rainfall for that period of the year.
At the end of August, the volume of water stored in the 900 reservoirs managed by the Institute represented 54 percent of the total storage capacity.
