Eleventh Week of British Culture begins in Cuba
Havana, Dec 4 (RHC) The 11th Week of British Culture in Cuba begins today with multiple activities that include literature, music, theater and visual arts.
This edition will be dedicated to the fantasy literature of that nation and the writer J.R.R. Tolkien, known mainly for being the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, in the context of the 50th anniversary of his death.
With the purpose of celebrating the rich literary heritage of the United Kingdom and promoting reading and knowledge of the main works, the program will host talks, workshops, concerts, film screenings, competitions and theatrical shows, according to the ambassador of that country, Sir George Hollingbery.
The official opening of the week is reserved for this Tuesday, from 4:00 p.m., local time, at the Castillo de la Real Fuerza in Havana’s Historic Center.
Among the attractions of the cultural week are live music, cosplay, raffles, the visual arts exhibition TocoGrifo, Tolkien and the imagined insularity - with large-format drawings by emerging artists between 12 and 21 years of age - and the musical show Tolkien in Havana.
Inspired by the work of Howard Shore, composer of the soundtrack of the film trilogy The Lord of the Rings, the concert will fuse Cuban native rhythms such as the danzón, the mambo and the cha cha cha, in the interpretations of the Cuban multi-instrumentalist Janio Abreu, together with the Havana Chamber Orchestra and the Choir of the National Lyric Theater.
Other activities include the show Cinderella according to the Beatles, starring the Colmenita Children's Theater Company, and the Reading and Writing Workshop on fantasy literature for children from the Akokán Project.
To the British embassy acquired more than a hundred original books that will be awarded as prizes at various events and donated to local projects. (Source: PL)
