According to Byanyima, Cuba is appreciated for its traditional solidarity, especially regarding health and education

Havana, May 10 (RHC) The executive director of UNAIDS, Winnie Byanyima, stated that Cuba has much to contribute to the world and developing countries in terms of health, and would benefit from strengthening South-South cooperation.

According to the head of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the island is appreciated for its tradition of solidarity with developing countries, especially in the fields of health and education.

She affirmed that her working visit to Cuba, from May 6 to 9, had the purpose of learning and sharing with other developing nations the experience of the first country that eliminated the transmission of HIV from mother to child in the world.

In addition to the problems that affect other countries, such as access to financing, migration, climate change, inflation, Cuba has to face a United States blockade that undermines achievements in health and in the fight against HIV and other diseases.

However, she noted, the island maintains leadership on these fronts because it developed its universal health care model and the comprehensive approach to confronting such scourges, with emphasis on prevention through educational and communication actions and campaigns.

As part of her agenda in Havana, Byanyima held meetings in various ministries, institutions, drug research and development centers, with representatives of international organizations present on the island, and high authorities including president Miguel Díaz-Canel.

According to the official, the experiences collected will allow sharing this knowledge about the Cuban health system with countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America that are reforming their health care systems. (Source: PL)
