According to Andrea Afeltro, in charge of the International Business Unit of the postal institution of Uruguay, Correo Uruguayo and Correos de Cuba have working for many years

Havana, May 20 (RHC) The post offices of Cuba and Uruguay are cooperating today to facilitate the sending of remittances by Cubans residing in Uruguay, according to Andrea Afeltro, in charge of the International Business Unit of the postal institution of the South American country.

Afeltro added that both institutions have been working together for many years and developing a close, strategic link to help emigrants in Uruguay who need to send money to their family in Cuba.

She recalled that the traditional cash transfer worked a long time ago, but the currency exchange in the island led users to use other markets and operators with higher costs.

Correo Uruguayo, in common agreement with Correos de Cuba, now offers the card transfer service in Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) used by the Cuban population, so Cuban migrants can now send money safely, reliably, through a State institution.

The Uruguayan official explained that the transfer is made in the national currency, the Uruguayan peso, and arrives in MLC to the recipient. The shipment is designed to not change the currency, since purchasing the dollar in the South American country implies higher prices and loss of money.

She stated, however, that Correo Uruguayo could take into consideration specific circumstances of people who are paid in US currency and enable the service in that currency.

She pointed out that there are two remittance options: Cuban pesos in cash to be collected at a post office on the island, or the new service by which it is deposited there on the MLC card. Both variants are available in the 180 post offices in Uruguay.

Afeltro announced that the postal institution develops a platform designed for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs to publish their products both locally and internationally.

These topics were explained by her in a meeting with members of the Cuban community residing in Uruguay, held at the headquarters of the Cuban embassy with the participation of Ambassador Zulan Popa and other officials of the diplomatic mission. (Source: PL)
