Immigration laws guarantee property rights in Cuba

 Havana, Jul 6 (RHC) The draft laws on migration, citizenship and foreigners, which will be submitted to the Cuban parliament, incorporate rules that respond to challenges to determine the residence of Cubans in Cuba and abroad.

This view prevailed in the virtual forum of the publication Cubadebate, with dozens of users on the Internet after the presentation recently made by the country's migration authorities to clarify the issue.

In that line, representatives of the Ministry of Interior (MININT) and Foreign Affairs, explained on national television that the legal bodies guarantee the exercise of the rights related to the availability on the patrimony in the national territory.

"In no practical way does it mean that any holder of houses or vehicles loses that property. There is no reason to interpret that citizens who have acquired property under the legitimacy in force may be affected in the enjoyment of their patrimonial rights", they assured.

On the contrary, they emphasized that "the migratory category of business investors is added, which creates facilities with interest to invest in Cuba for foreign residents or emigrants".

Regarding effective citizenship, it was stated that the acquisition of another citizenship does not imply the loss of Cuban citizenship. Cuban citizens, while they are in the national territory are governed by this condition, under the terms established by law and cannot make use of a foreign citizenship.

In this sense, First Colonel Mario Méndez assured that Cuban citizenship is also acquired "by naturalization, for cases that corresponds to the President to decide" and for those who renounce their citizenship, "the procedure is initiated at the request of the interested party".

The Caribbean country's migration authorities have announced that the 24-month permit to remain abroad will be abolished, as it does not make sense to reintroduce it.

"Anyone who has left the country since 2013 and has maintained his residence in Cuba (lives abroad but returns before the 24 months) will maintain his residence," they clarified.  (Source: Prensa Latina)
