Upec is a social and professional organization formed on July 15, 1963, as a result of the union of press professionals until then grouped in the National College of Journalists, the Association of Reporters of Havana, the Press Association of Cuba and hundreds of small organizations and journalistic associations that grouped reporters, correspondents, proofreaders, photographers, cameramen, cartoonists and humorists.

Among its general objectives and obligations are to defend journalists in the legal and ethical exercise of the profession, in the right of access to sources and in the fulfillment of their work of information and guidance, as well as to contribute to the training of journalists in the best traditions of Cuban political thought, and in the high patriotic, ethical and democratic principles that inspire Cuban society.
