Cuba Reaffirms Need for Nuclear Disarmament

Havana, July 22 (RHC) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez reiterated today that nuclear disarmament is and must remain an international priority because of the serious threat these weapons pose to humanity.

In his profile on the social network X, the highest representative of the island's diplomacy warned that there are 12,121 nuclear weapons in the world, of which 9,585 are ready for use.

There are 12,121 nuclear weapons in the world, of which 9,585 are ready for use.

This position was expressed last April by the Permanent Representative of this Caribbean nation to the United Nations (UN), Ernesto Soberón, while intervening in an exchange of views promoted by the Commission of this international organization dedicated to the subject.

The states that possess such weapons must assume their primary responsibility to achieve nuclear disarmament in a transparent, verifiable and irreversible manner within a specified period of time, he said.

Cuba is a party to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the Treaty of Tlatelolco, and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, and, like the United Nations, considers it urgent to put an end to this type of armament.
