Cuba authorizes the importation of means of transport by Cuban citizens

Havana, July 31 (RHC) Cuba has approved the import of internal combustion vehicles, mopeds, motorcycles and electric tricycles for the modernization of transportation, announced Minister of Transportation Eduardo Rodríguez.

According to what Rodríguez said on Cuban television, the policy allows all Cuban citizens to import low-displacement (250 cc) internal combustion engines and motorcycles, which follows a request from the population.

The authorization will also benefit employees and diplomatic personnel in missions abroad, based on their income in foreign currency and according to the regulations prepared by the Ministry of Transport.

The minister also reported that travelers will be able to bring into the country an electric tricycle, "preferably equipped with solar panels, with tariff preference so that the charging of the vehicle does not fall on the national electrical energy system".

The new policy maintains what is established in the current resolution on the importation of mopeds and electric motorcycles, explained Rodríguez. He added that these decisions benefit a small sector of the population with the possibility of importing these means of transportation, and the community, since it will benefit from the income of taxes applied to these imports.

Part of this income will go to a special fund managed by the Ministry, which will allow a more stable process of recovery of public transport and its infrastructure, prioritizing charging stations for electric vehicles, said Rodríguez.

The minister assured that the measures announced will promote the development of the industry, the transformation of the national energy matrix and road safety by improving the technical state of the vehicle fleet and offering alternatives for passenger and freight mobility.
