Fidel Castro and José de San Martín remembered in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Aug 18 (RHC) Argentines and Cubans paid tribute this Saturday in this capital to the historic leader of the Revolution on the island, Fidel Castro (1926-2016), and the Liberator of the South José de San Martín (1778-1850).

During a ceremony at the Argentine-Cuban Friendship House, workers, diplomats, members of the Movement of Solidarity with the Caribbean country and Cuban residents in this nation paid tribute to the Commander-in-Chief on the 98th anniversary of his birth and highlighted the importance of his legacy in the current context.

They also remembered the Father of the Argentine Nation 174 years after his death and highlighted the convergence of the thinking of both figures.

There is a very close relationship between these two giants: they decided to give everything for the cause of freedom, said the president of the Casa, Rubén Zaccaro, who also referred to the relevance of Cuba's National Hero, José Martí (1853-1895), for Latin American history.

Today we can become the generation of Fidel's centenary and honor his memory with concrete actions. There are two years left to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth and we can work to achieve our true and definitive independence, he added.

Likewise, he asserted that the fight against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba and other aggressions against the largest of the Antilles, such as its inclusion in a list of alleged sponsors of terrorism drawn up by Washington, will always be a priority.

For his part, the Cuban ambassador in Argentina, Pedro Pablo Prada, called for the strengthening of unity and love among peoples to confront hatred and divisions.

In 2026 we will celebrate the centenary of Fidel Castro and we will do it as a new leap in history. It is in us the ability to change the course of events to stop the fascism that is advancing impetuously in Europe and Latin America. We must fight more than ever in the field of values and ideas, he said.

We must be clear about the facts and the intention of the powerful to bring us to our knees. They are coming for Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and all of Our America.

They are not interested in freedom, rights or independence, but in our natural resources, he added.

In this House, which is a temple of the ideas of our forefathers, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the defense of every conquest achieved with our struggles, of truth, principles and morals, he concluded.
