Cuban authorities refute news on the planning of 72-hour blackouts
Havana, Nov 29 (RHC) The Electrical Union has refuted the misinformation circulating on social media about the alleged plan to shut down electricity in Cuba for three days.
On the organization's X account, the public was reminded that the real impact of the power shortage is reported every day through radio and the Buenos Días television program, on the Caribe Channel.
Anti-Cuban media and social media outlets have recently announced that the island is facing a potential power outage lasting more than three days, based on the misinterpretation and misrepresentation of Decree 110/2024, which was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic this Wednesday.
The decree, in its Chapter VI, Article 40.1, states that the Minister of Energy and Mines proposes to the Council of Ministers a special electric contingency regime when the National Electroenergy System is unable to meet the demand of the system with the available generation capacity. In such cases, it is necessary to affect the electric service in a planned and sustained manner for more than three days.
However, the following articles provide details on how the measure will be implemented, and emphasize that the energy councils determine which services must either fully or partially suspend their operations during the electric contingency regime, with particular attention during peak demand hours, in case of specific situations that require such provisions.
They also work together with legal representatives of state and non-state economic actors, as well as the various associations in the territory, to adjust working hours to shift the loads during peak demand times.
Among the transitional provisions of the decree, it is stated that high-consumption entities existing at the time of publication in the Official Gazette have a period of up to three years to install renewable energy sources, aiming to generate at least 50% of the electricity they consume during peak hours.
