Head of Cuban parliament calls for ceasefire in Gaza to be respected

Havana, Jan 20 (RHC) The president of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba, Esteban Lazo, urged for the observance of the ceasefire in Gaza, which began this Sunday, and for an end to the genocide against the Palestinian people.

On the social media platform X, Lazo also confirmed the unwavering support of the Caribbean nation for Palestine.

The truce in Gaza commenced on Sunday morning and is expected to continue for six weeks in the initial phase, as per the agreement.

It is expected that 33 Israeli citizens will be freed during this time, the majority of them alive, in exchange for 1 904 Palestinians.

Those released include members of all factions, including the state-sponsored Fatah movement, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

This phase also encompasses the cessation of military activities, the Israeli departure from the residential areas of the coastal enclave, including the so-called Netzarin corridor that cuts through the Strip; and the resettlement of hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons in the northern regions.

Furthermore, the arrival of 600 trucks carrying essential supplies for the region, which has been devastated by hunger and a dire humanitarian crisis due to 15 months of conflict, has been approved.

The second stage of the agreement, which is scheduled to commence negotiations 16 days after the ceasefire, will focus on achieving a lasting and comprehensive ceasefire, exchanging additional prisoners, and fully withdrawing Israeli troops from Gaza. (Source: Prensa Latina)
