The United States dispatches first aircraft with migrants to Guantánamo
Havana, Feb 5 (RHC) The inaugural U.S. military flight transporting immigrants to the illegal Guantánamo Bay naval base took off on Tuesday, marking the beginning of a controversial measure by the Trump administration.
The facility, historically used to hold individuals suspected of terrorism, will now serve as a detention center for immigrants.
«We will not tolerate the United States being used as a haven for criminals from other countries,» Karoline Leavitt, spokesperson for the White House, stated on Fox News.
President Donald Trump has defended the decision, stating that the base has the capacity to accommodate up to 30,000 individuals.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who served in Guantánamo during his military career, has described the location as ideal for this purpose. In recent days, additional personnel have been deployed to prepare for the operation.
Tom Homan, who previously served as the Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is known as the "border czar" in the new Trump administration, announced that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would take charge of the Guantánamo Bay detention facility.
Recently, Cuba has rejected the President of the United States' decision to use the Guantánamo Naval Base to detain tens of thousands of migrants, whom they intend to forcibly deport.
In a statement, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that the new measure is a clear example of the harshness with which the government is attempting to address the issues stemming from the economic and social circumstances of the nation, as well as its own governance and foreign policy, which includes hostility towards countries of origin.
The statement further highlights that the territory where it is suggested to confine the migrants does not belong to the United States. (Source: Cubadebate)
